I was running with friends late last fall when I felt sudden knee pain that left me barely able to walk, let alone run. An x-ray showed a possible stress fracture. I was disappointed but consoled myself with the knowledge that stress fractures heal. I felt less sanguine when a follow-up MRI revealed that it wasn’t a stress fracture causing the pain; it was arthritis.
